REPORT OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF ISLAMABAD METROPOLITAN

July 5, 2004

  1. MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT:  We have seen almost a two hundred per cent growth of members during my tenure as President of the Rotary Club of Islamabad Metropolitan in the last two years. I request Rotarians who were inducted in the last two years to kindly rise.
    • We have thirty- eight Honorary Rotarians of which twenty-one are Ambassadors and High Commissioners.
    • MEMBERSHIP RETENTION: This year we again showed excellent membership retention figures.
    • We have had over one thousand percent increase in the membership of our lady members. We now have 14 lady members.
  2. PRESIDENT CITATION 2003-04:  We have won this prestigious Rotary International Award this year as well as many other Rotary Awards at District level.
  3. THE FAMILY OF ROTARY: We have formed this Committee and the highlight of our meetings has been the involvement of spouses and adult children in some of them.
  4. LEND A HAND: was this year’s theme.
    1. We donated Rupees Four Lac and Fifty Thousand for the Prime Minister Flood Disaster Relief Fund. Members of the Turkish Committee may kindly rise.
    2. We have given scholarships of Rupees One Lac forty thousand to a Pakistani girl student studying in the U.K.
    3. We have given Rs. 36000/- to Viqar-Un-Nisa Noon School for scholarship at Rs. 20/- per month per student for one year for 210 students.
    4. We are supporting Mrs. Shamshad Begum who is a widow and is a T.B patient with seven kids.
    5. We are supporting the studies of the children of the late Mr. Qaisar Khan in Taxila.
    6. The Karachi Concert of the Turkish Group in association with the Rotary Club of Karachi run by Mr. Aziz Memon is a prime example of our Lend A Hand motto and also of Club Service. The entire prearrangements and the Concert costs were met by the Embassy of Turkey and us.
    7. Our Club has approved funds for three children on an yearly basis.
    8. Our Club has approved funds for the PCDP-eye Camp in Dassu.
    9. Our Club has already made a donation to a home for handicapped children run by a German volunteer in Lahore.
    10. Our Club has raised funds for a life saving operation for young Shezad at PIMS Hospital. This is being followed up.
    11. Our Club has approved raising of funds and committed ourselves to help on a regular basis the Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital and Tuberculosis Centre run by Dr. Chris Schmotzer in Rawalpindi.
  5. PUBLIC RELATIONS AND ROTARY IMAGE: The large number of the exceptional Guest Speakers we had and our Honorary Membership more then reflects our leadership in Pakistan in this field.
  6. LITERACY:  We have set up three Literacy Centers in Dhok Kazim Basti, Mora Noor and Rah-e-Amal in Rawalpindi. We will be using the books as outlined by P.D.G. Dr. Ali Akhtar Sahib within this program and the Board has approved funds for this.
  7. LEND A HAND FOR PEACE IN SOUTH ASIA: We were the first Rotary Club in Pakistan to invite the High Commissioner of India, H.E. Mr. Shivshankar Menon to our meeting before the thaw took place in Pakistan-India relations. We highlighted a third track of diplomacy for the first time which is growing into an international movement.  We are also discussing with the Rotary Club of Pune Ganeshkhind, India the exchange of students.
  8. POLIO PLUS: As you are aware our Club and our Senior Rtn. Mr. M.S. Lodhi has co-ordinated throughout the year with the National Chairman of Polio Plus Committee Rtn. PDG Abdul Haieey Khan on this program.  We are actively participating in this program in our area including attending Seminars and other promotional activities. Rotary International has contributed so far over USD fifty million for this programme.
  9. CLUB SERVICE: We are the leaders in this field.  We have followed the following aspects strenuously:  
      • Active participation in fellowship
      • Taking active part in club programs
      • Attending all meetings regularly
      • Attending District events
      • Helping in organizing/sponsoring new clubs
      • Membership development
      • Communicating Rotary information within and outside the Club.
  10. VOCATIONAL SERVICE: The Polytechnic Institute for Women Project where we have arranged US $ 30,000/- from USAID. Our projects in Dhok Kazim Basti, Mora Noor and Rah-e-Amal in Rawalpindi are the prime examples of our work in this field.
  11. THE ROTARY FOUNDATION: We have donated US $ 2551/- to the Rotary Foundation as Annual giving. Next year you can avail substantial funds for the projects highlighted above in return.
  12. GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE: Our representative Miss Hina Dara was selected for this program for Montana and we also welcomed the U.S. Youth Exchange Team from Montana for tea and discussion at a special meeting in Islamabad. We have set the ball rolling for Indian Exchange teams to visit us.
  13. 13. COMMUNITY SERVICE: We have set the highest importance to this field.  We have had Tree Plantation at a personal level, Free Eye operations and have approved funds for a Dispensary in village Maira Bhegwal. As stated earlier in association with USAID the Club arranged US$ 30000/- (thirty thousand) for The Polytechnic Institute for Women to set up a Computer Lab and training for girls from impoverished homes.
  14. Our Club has adopted two Centennial Projects:

    1. The Baltistan Health and Education Foundation Project which will serve between 1, 50,000 to 2, 00,000 people.
    2. The Polytechnic Institute for Women Project which will serve about 463 students both in vocational training and community training.
  15. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE: As stated earlier we have the largest number of Ambassadors and High Commissioners in our Club in Pakistan and probably world wide. We had various visitors brought to our Club by DGN Shakil Ansari Sahib including a team of Japanese visitors. We were also invited by DGN Shakil Ansari Sahib to meet an Indian Rotary Delegation over dinner.
  16. We have 77 members and 38 Honorary Members in our Club. When you compare the population of Islamabad to Karachi this is some achievement.
